Library Assistant

The Bodleian Libraries‘ English Faculty Library is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and versatile person to join their team.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a varied and interesting role in a busy circulating library.

Your duties will include the delivery of high-quality, front-line reader services, assisting readers and working with both the University’s online library catalogue (SOLO) and the automated library management system. You will also provide support for essential work on the preparation, sorting and organisation of collections to be moved prior to the opening of the Library of the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities in Summer 2025.

The role involves lifting, carrying and shelving books, climbing ladders and pushing trolleys.

This is a fixed term, part time post, working 20 hours per week, until 31 July 2025. It is expected that the 20 hours would be worked across 4 or 5 days per week, with the exact pattern to be discussed.

About you

  • You will have the ability to communicate effectively, confidently and courteously with readers, colleagues and the public.
  • You will be able to undertake a range of routine tasks with care and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritise and work under pressure is also essential.
  • Previous experience of working in a library environment or customer services environment is desirable.
